Pandemic Observations -- June 29, Top 40+ Nations (A New Wave Building Yet Again?): [1]

One More Time?!?

Last week, while I was still celebrating the more than 4-month long decline in the weekly global death toll from Covid-19, I did note that new cases seemed to have stabilized and that numerous regions appeared poised to resume a significant upswing.

Sure enough, Omicron’s descendants staged the largest single week surge in new cases since Omicron’s first appearance last December — pushing the weekly global caseload back over the 5 million mark. Even worse, the weekly global death toll has also followed suit with surprising rapidity.

And unlike May’s mini-surge, which was almost entirely due to the explosive meltdown in North Korea, this new wave is perhaps the broadest-based surge yet — with North America, Latin America, Europe, and India all involved. Indeed, while the US of course remains the largest single driver thus far, it’s getting serious competition already from Germany, France, Italy, and even Brazil.

The only relatively good news is that China does seem to have successfully contained its own serious outbreak this Spring, at least so far; but if the PRC authorities think they can actually reopen their country at this point without a North Korea (or even Taiwan) scale meltdown, they are almost certainly in for a very rude awakening.

Speaking of North Korea, while they admit to nearly 5 million cases, they continue to assert that they have recorded just 73 deaths — a claim that is absolutely preposterous. Given what we know about Omicron’s case fatality rate, coupled with the almost complete lack of any vaccination effort or other “natural” immunity among the NK population, they should have seen at least 10-50 thousand deaths by now — unless this was a completely different and far less lethal virus than anything related to Covid-19 (and since they’re apparently not big on testing either, we may not know one way or another for quite some time).
