McConnell is Playing Us. Again. [1]

I’m going to try not to be doom and gloom here, but I’m certain that the vast majority of you taking the time to read this is as righteously furious as I. This past week has seen the rule of law and all rationality devastated. The ability to curtail the ridiculous proliferation of guns has been massively hampered, based on the inability of six fools to read and respect the first few words of one of the most famous amendments in one of the most famous founding documents known to man. Anyone who can get pregnant’s right to choose what happens to their body has been stripped away, something that will lead to countless tragic deaths. The Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to, you know, protect the environment has been crushed. That’s not even all of it.

Regarding the Roe v. Wade ruling, it’s not like there wasn’t any warning that was coming. Our leaders had a couple of months to prepare a plan of action to harness the fury of their electorate. What did we get? Pretty much nothing. Some fundraising emails asking for money and a committee meeting next month. God bless America.

That’s all a massive kick in the teeth, and an acute failure to rise to the moment. What really rubs salt in the wound is this deal that we learned of today between McConnell and Biden. The idea is that McConnell would refrain from trying to block any of Biden’s federal nominees in exchange for Biden nominating an anti-choice extremist by the name of Chad Meredith. There will be plenty of ink spilled regarding the loathsome actions that Meredith has already undertaken, so I’m going to leave my additional criticisms aside, save for one unimportant observation: Chad Meredith looks like the winning drawing in a game of Pictionary where the artist was trying to get their teammates to guess the term “date rape.”

I mean, really.

Now, DKos’ Joan McCarter did a very good job explaining how Meredith was too corrupt for even the Trump administration. That anyone could be that corrupt is incredible in and of itself. What’s more astounding is the idea that McConnell can be trusted in the slightest. As the past couple of decades have shown us, the concept that he would keep his word is utterly, tragically laughable.

But let’s say McConnell does keep his word, even if the Democrats in the Senate vote to toss Meredith to the curb. Even then, McConnell has something seriously beneficial to him: ammunition. I’m not a strategist. I’m just a gamer nerd who spends his day doing customer service, but I can envision the script to an effective commercial.

Open with a shot of the time Biden fell asleep in the UN meeting about the climate crisis. Narrator: Do you think the Democratic Party cares about a woman’s right to choose? You may be surprised. Following the announcement of the overturn of Roe v Wade, the Democratic President Joseph Biden nominated Chad Meredith to a lifetime position in the Federal Court. Chad Meredith is best known for his anti-choice views and his deeply seated corruption. In fact, this was a nominee that was too far gone for the Trump administration, and they wanted him there. Joe Biden doesn’t care about your right to choose. The Democratic Party doesn’t care about your right to choose. -This message brought to you by same PAC with a name generic enough to not be obviously tied to the Republican goons.

Now, I would be disgusted by this commercial, but concede that it has a strong chance of demoralizing voters, something that we cannot afford right now. Biden following through with this poison has a good chance of being the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back. I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic when I say that this “deal” could be the complete end of Constitutional law. Based on what I can see, the reprehensible party’s plan is to:

1. Demoralize the majority electorate, allowing a red tide to claim the 2022 elections, filling positions from Congress all the way down to school boards with brainless goblins.

2. Allow those goblins to get to work. Set in place mechanisms where the Democratic Party can never win any meaningful offices in the numbers that reflect the will of the majority of people ever again.

3. Complete the transformation of the United States to a fascist, one party state along the lines of the Soviet Union. (Yes, I know that they were considered “Communist” but be serious.)

So, I will repeat the call to vote for the Democratic Party. But I also implore the leaders of that party to start respecting the adversary. Republicans may immoral asshats that are out of step with what we citizens want and need, but they are not stupid. We cannot be either. It’s well past time to meet the moment.
