New Democratic TV ad rips GOP gubernatorial primary field over campaign woes [1]

Date: 2022-06-14

LANSING – It has not been a stellar few weeks for the Republican candidates for Michigan governor.

And in case anyone missed that fact, the Democratic Governors Association is stepping up.

Put Michigan First, a DGA-backed group, is launching a five-figure cable TV ad buy Tuesday that highlights the forged signature scandal that disqualified five GOP gubernatorial candidates from the Aug. 2 primary ballot, Thursday's federal criminal charges against candidate Ryan Kelley for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, and assorted other issues.

"This entire crowd of Republicans back policies that are too radical for Michigan, with a long list of failures that includes breaking the law, mass fraud, harassment, and pushing fake medicine,” said spokesman Sam Newton.

The ad, which Newton said would appear statewide on Fox News and other cable stations, attacks former Detroit Police Chief James Craig and Oakland County businessman and self-described "quality guru" Perry Johnson on the fake signature issue, Oakland County businessman Kevin Rinke for being sued for sexual harassment in the early 1990s, Norton Shores businesswoman Tudor Dixon for appearing in low-budget vampire and zombie movies between 2008 and 2012, and Kalamazoo chiropractor Garrett Soldano for "pushing fake COVID cures."

James and Johnson are among the five candidates disqualified from the ballot over forged signatures. Kelley, Rinke, Dixon and Soldano are still on the ballot.

The only Republican candidate for governor to escape unscathed from the ad is Farmington Hills pastor Ralph Rebandt.

The ad — the only one Put Michigan First has aired in 2022 — is not 100% factual. It opens by saying Craig "tried to become governor by breaking the law, using thousands of forged signatures." Though forged signatures are clearly not allowed under Michigan law, the Bureau of Elections said it had no evidence that Craig knew the signatures his campaign submitted were fake. Such a finding would be necessary to say Craig personally broke the law.

Similarly, Soldano has denied saying that the Juice Plus supplements he has marketed would cure COVID-19. Instead, he told Bridge Magazine that strengthening one's immune system through use of such supplements would ease recovery from the virus.

“Maybe this never-ending Republican chaos would be a good script for one of Tudor Dixon’s low-budget horror movies, but it’s the wrong agenda for Michigan families," Newton said.
