Welcome to the June 29th edition of Helping Humpday, a regular feature of Street Prophets. We’re at the middle of the week, when we need a push to get over the hump and start looking toward the weekend. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three), and sit with us.

It’s summer. It’s hot but we’ve had a reasonable amount of rain. My vegetable garden is growing apace. Ah, but those tomato worms! I pick them off individually—no poisons in my garden. I’m good at finding the eggs and scraping them off. The new hatchlings not so much. They resemble little threads of white lint. I rub off any that I see but I’m also rubbing random organic matter. But of course some worms escape me and I find them in various stages of growth, from teeny to nearly fully grown. A tomato worm or two can completely defoliate a good sized tomato plant, and a pepper plant, before dropping off and burrowing into the ground to transform into the next stage. So I should just kill any tomato worms I see? Well, no. Because they will emerge as hawk moths, and those are great pollinators. And we need good pollinators now with the European honeybee disappearing. But hey, I want my tomatoes! Lots of tomatoes! Unlimited tomatoes! Like many things in life, it’s a balancing act. I cut the leaf panicle from the plant, worm attached, and drop it across the stream, hoping the worm will find something else to eat on its journey to moth-dom.

The people on our needs list are doing their own balancing, and for some of them life is becoming unbalanced.

Looking over the list this week, some needs are almost met and just need a nudge to get there. Some of our other Kossacks need a little lift to get over a hump, too. Maybe it’s an unexpected medical bill. Maybe there’s a life situation that has come up and requires resources beyond regular income. Maybe they just got behind and need help getting their footing again. For whatever reason they need help, Wednesdays are the day the Street Prophets focus on those needs. Maybe you’ve skipped over this weekly diary, thinking the little you can give won’t make a difference. But you don’t have to meet a person’s entire need. If we all join together, the small amounts each person can contribute will add up to enough to make a difference in someone’s life. Even $2 or $5 or $10, when added to the mickle that others give, can be all that it takes.
