In a state where the Republican Party has long dominated statewide races and the contests for wide-ranging congressional districts like the 2nd, which since its creation in 2011 has been held by Rep. Chris Stewart, primary elections have often decided Utah’s political future. So in a year like 2022, when the GOP is fielding more candidates and holding more primaries than ever before, the June 28 primary seems poised to decide what direction the Beehive State will take for years to come. Will Stewart maintain his hold on the 2nd? Will incumbent U.S. Sen. Mike Lee keep his post? Much depends on how Republican voters feel about what promises to be a complicated set of races heading toward the 2022 midterms.
