Democrats lost NINE Senate seats in 2010 midterm elections ending Democratic control over Senate and effectively limiting impact Obama could have during his remaining time in White House. The loss directly led to McConnell denying Obama seating a Justice on SCOTUS and the rest as they say, is history and not a very pretty one.
It’s easy for people to slam Democrats for not doing anything but voters directly impact who goes to Congress and in this case who does not. Voter turnout is typically lower than in presidential elections but in this case, it was horrific.
18-24 year olds have an ugly history when it comes to midterm elections and in 2010, just 19% turned out to vote. Was Democratic defeat solely due to 18-24 yr olds not bothering to vote? Likely not but who knows. 35-50 yr old turnout wasn’t much better. The point is not voting determines who goes to Congress just as much as voting does. All elections matter.
Democrats losing the Senate in 2010 led to chain of events that got us where we are today. If we’re able to avoid disaster, we need to learn from it. Hoping we get the chance.
