Kazakhstan and the causes of its political and social crisis – Canal Caribe
[]
Date: 2022-02
When analyzing the situation in Kazakhstan and the causes of its political and social crisis, there is an issue that we cannot ignore, and that is what that country means for the region and its neighbors, and the weight it has in world geopolitics.
It is not just its size, nor its enormous natural wealth, nor because it represents 40 percent of the world uranium market, nor its large gas and oil deposits, there is also another element, I would say, that is very important, its geographical position and relationship with China and Russia, which gives it a relevant, strategic place in the United States-Russia-China conflict.
How important is it for Moscow?
Just a few elements: we are talking about one of the ex-Soviet republics located in Central Asia, the area in which the Kremlin has managed to secure its borders with some success against the encirclement of some Western powers.
Let us remember what is happening in Europe with the incorporation into NATO of several countries from the former socialist camp and the former Soviet Baltic republics, the deployment of missiles, well, that is not the reality in Central Asia, and it is due to the links that Putin has been weaving with those nations, the so-called “TAN”.
In that area are the republics of the Russian Federation with the most tendency to instability and Islamic extremism, and other details, in Kazakhstan, more than 3 million Russians live, and that language is spoken by more than 50 percent of the population . Such is the importance that the country is part of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
For China it is more than hundreds of kilometers of borders, Kazakhstan is an important piece in its transnational project known as the Silk Road. China is Kazakhstan’s second largest trading partner, behind Russia percent, with a trade of more than 13.5 billion dollars in 2021, an exchange that grew significantly last year despite the coronavirus.
With these elements, it is not difficult to imagine how many expectations and emotion some powers would feel, if the events that occurred in Kazakh territory, if they had overthrown the government, forced the country to turn its back on Russia and China, or at least lead to a less committed relationship. The causes of the protests are dissimilar and not entirely clear.
Some media point out the social discontent with the political system and the economic situation, these arguments are always the first face, what is seen in the epidermis.
Some experts with sources on the ground and in the intelligence agencies also point to the clans, to the local chiefs, so important in this type of society, and their plans to overthrow the central government.
Anonymous sources have surfaced directly accusing foreign governments of being involved in this destabilizing operation to pressure and weaken Russia at a time when Moscow seeks to resolve one of its worst NATO-related crises.
Let us remember that a meeting between Washington and Moscow on the issue of security has already begun. But whatever the causes, beyond that popular disagreement with the country’s political and economic situation, despite all that, both practice and theory show that it is very difficult for this type of protest to have been completely spontaneous and Let it be just popular dislike.
Too synchronized, too explosive not to suspect that there is an alien hand pushing behind or a voice whispering in your ear. Until now, suspicion and common sense in the face of a film very similar to many other views. The tests and evidence will take time, but they will come.
