Cuba for the first time above the global internet penetration average – Canal Caribe
[]
Date: 2022-02
The presence of Cubans in the digital public space grows in spiral, as a result of the process of computerization of our society. Cuba already exhibits today an internet penetration in its population that exceeds that of the world average. This is shown in the Digital Report 2020 on digital trends and social networks worldwide, which has been preparing for 9 years the creative agency specialized in social media We Are Social together with Hootsuite, the most used platform internationally for the management of social networks. According to the newly unveiled report – which includes the numbers for the year 2019 – 7 million 100 thousand Cubans are already connected to the internet, which represents 63% of the country’s population.
While in the world they have connection, today, 59% of the inhabitants of the planet. For the first time, Cuba exhibits a higher penetration rate than the world as a whole. The jump has been great. Just a few years ago our country appeared in the queue of connectivity statistics in the world.
In the year 2000, when computers began to be placed in our schools, Cuba had only 0.5% penetration. At the beginning of the current decade, in 2011, this index reached only 16%, as reflected by the Internet Live Stats site. In eight years the figure almost quadruples and the country is already above the average of the world list.
The closing of 2018 Cuba exhibited the figure of 6 470 000 connected, representing 56% of the country’s population From January 2019 to January 2020, Cuba added 630 thousand new Internet users, which means a growth of more than 7%. Remarkable impact on this democratization of internet access in the country has the expansion of mobile data services (despite insufficient infrastructure and high prices).
At the end of 2019 ETECSA announced that there were already 3.7 million mobile lines with access to data, in just one year after the service opened. That number is probably not fully included in the Digital 2020 report. Cuba continues to advance in the access to the digital world, as an expression of a political will of the State and the desire for communication and knowledge of the Cuban. There is much to move forward in access, content and uses; but it makes its way to walk.
