On January 28h, 1983, as a tribute to the 130th anniversary of the birth of our Apostle and National Hero José Martí, the Tele-Rebelde Channel, its companion, informative-sports channel, went on the air for the first time nationally after the merger of the signals from Channel 2 and Tele-Rebelde from the eastern provinces.
This is the actual date of the foundation of a television channel that has never changed its name since then and its fundamental content has been the same: sports programming, combined with information and general programming.
Such decision, argued and collegiate in the highest instances of the Government and the Communist Party of Cuba, was due to solid reasoning.
Cuba urgently needed, at least, that part of one of its two national television channels have an important weight in the programming dedicated to informing, and making known the great transformations that the Revolution carried out and the projects in development in favor of his town.
At that time, a good part of the developed countries and some other developing ones with sufficient resources, had television channels dedicated to information.
Foreign television stations in Spanish, with their format of headlines and short news, had produced a good impact on the few who could see them and who appreciated them as a useful instrument of influence, despite not circulating publicly in the country.
