Díaz-Canel congratulates best athletes in 2021 – Canal Caribe

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, congratulated the best athletes in 2021 this Thursday, as the culmination of a year in which the national sports movement registered its fifth best performance in the Olympic Games.
Through a message on Twitter, the president expressed that “Cuba, full of glory, rewards the efforts of its children”, when the list of the 10 most outstanding exponents of the year, both conventional and disabled, in addition to the winners was revealed in other categories.
The fighter Mijaín López, a four-time starter under five rings; and the judoka Idalys Ortiz, Olympic multi-medalist, received recognition for the best athletes of the season, endorsed by their feats at the Tokyo 2020 event. Boxing was chosen as the most relevant individual sport, as a reward for his dominance in the Olympic version of the Japanese capital, with four titles; and in the Belgrade World Cup, thanks to three golden scepters.
For its part, the monarch canoeing duo in Tokyo, made up of Fernando Dayán Jorge and Serguey Torres, was selected in the category of non-individual event, while among the novices the canoeist Yarisleidis Cirilo was the most outstanding.
In the section for athletes with disabilities, the award-winning sprinter Omara Durand and the jumper Yankiel Robiel Sol deserved great honors from the authorities and the specialized press.
The awards gala will take place on the 23rd, a time to also entertain the competitors who took part in the I Junior Pan American Games, just finished in the Colombian region of Cali-Valle.
