The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, affirmed this Tuesday that the country will not close borders, but will strengthen the control of international travelers before the appearance of the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, called Ómicron.

Through his Twitter account, the president said that “#Cuba will adopt measures to preserve what we have achieved”, alluding to the information note of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) which informs the new procedures for those who arrive in this nation as of December 4.

The day before health authorities announced the decision to require an official document that validates full immunization to visitors from Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Eswatini, countries where the strain has already been reported.

Samples will also be taken for PCR upon arrival and must show the negative result of the last test carried out 72 hours before traveling to this Caribbean island. Travelers will spend a seven-day quarantine in a hotel for that purpose, whose lodging and transportation expenses will be at their own expense.

A second PCR will be performed on the sixth day at the facility and, if they are negative to the test, on the seventh day they will be discharged, said Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology at a press conference. Meanwhile, travelers from Israel, Belgium, Hong Kong, Egypt, Turkey and other Sub-Saharan African nations will also comply with these measures with the exception of quarantine and a second PCR.
