USA renewed emergency against Venezuela. Who threatens whom?
['Please Enter Your Name Here']
Date: 2021-11
Apparently, US President Donald Trump liked the advantages of national emergency declarations to satisfy his whims even if they were not necessary. He already did it last month with the aim of getting the budget for the controversial wall on the border with Mexico without the need for authorization from Congress.
However, the House of Representatives sought a way to prevent it, at least for the time being.
Now the tenant of the White House returns with another urgency. But this is not his idea. Precisely today Trump renewed for another year the declaration of national emergency on Venezuela, decreed initially by the ex-president Barack Obama in March of 2015.
Under the umbrella of that measure are sanctions for Venezuelan government officials, within the framework of an economic blockade against the South American country that has cost around 35 billion dollars, according to reports from the executive led by Nicolás Maduro.
In a statement sent to Congress, the North American leader assures that Venezuela continues representing “a threat for the policy of the United States”. It would be necessary to see who threatens whom, because the coup attempts have come from Washington against Caracas and not the other way around.
That information should not surprise us. The self-proclaimed in the street of the opposition Juan Guaidó as president in charge without the slightest legal or moral support, showed how far the United States and its allies can reach in these subversive operations, which even threaten to extend to other nations such as Cuba and Nicaragua.
Recall that a few days ago Trump National Security Adviser, Jonh Bolton, announced that his country plans to form a coalition to change the Venezuelan Government and added that the White House is not afraid to use at this juncture the unfortunately famous Monroe Doctrine. As part of the campaign, the United States insists on complicating the situation. They blame Cuba for the support that the Caribbean country gives to the Bolivarian government. That is the apparent justification to increase the pressure to make effective the title III of the Helms Burton Act.
The measure seeks to suffocate the Cuban economy through direct interference in its internal affairs under the pretext that there is an alleged army of 25,000 Cuban troops on Venezuelan soil, something that the Cuban authorities immediately denied categorically. It is evident then that Washington’s intention is to reconfigure Latin America and the Caribbean according to its own model. The next chapters of this saga of attempts to change the regime could be used against Nicaragua and Cuba. The ultra-right sectors in US federal agencies and a recalcitrant minority in Congress, particularly legislators in the state of Florida, stimulate and extol these ideas. It remains to be seen whether this time, as in the past, in addition to the strong economic pressures, Washington again resorts to military intervention in Latin America.
