After achieving important negotiations and contacts to expand the distribution of its literature in China and other parts of the world, Cuba closed its participation in the 26th Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF).

Juan Rodríguez, president of the Cuban Book Institute, said that the national delegation participated in meetings with the main leaders and organizers of the event, as well as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to coordinate the presence of the island in 2020, when it will be a guest country of honor.

Cuban classics will be translated into Chinese

As he explained, they talked about the reprint and translation into Chinese of classic and contemporary titles, as it will be one of the variants planned to be presented at the fair next year. Another option in plans is the sample of books in other languages, such as English, that help to know more about Cuba from all possible points of view, that is, political, cultural, historical and economic.

However, he added, it will be taken into account that there is a significant number of Chinese citizens who studied Spanish in the Caribbean nation and other Spanish-speaking states, and would be prepared to receive the works written in that language.

“We are leaving with a broad business proposal so that Cuban digital and paper literature can move around the world, it is a great opportunity (…) for our reality to be known from our version, and not from those who try to misrepresent it and create criteria that are not always exactly the truth, ”he said.

The Chinese public is interested in Cuban authors At that point, Rodríguez commented on the large influx to the public stand and authors with an interest in books related to the thinking and career of Fidel Castro, José Martí and Ernesto Che Guevara, and the history of Cuba, its music, dance, ballet, as well as those of writers Miguel Barnet, Nicolás Guillén and José Lezama Lima. He also talked about proposals from foreign exhibitors and publishers who want to reproduce Cuban titles in other countries.

This is the third time that the Antillean nation is present at BIBF and Rodriguez said that she will be invited to honor in edition 27 in the context of celebrating China and Cuba 60 years of diplomatic ties. Cuba was the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean with its own stand at the BIFB and also participated in a regional position with Venezuela, El Salvador, Granada, Uruguay and Mexico. In addition, writers Jesús David Curbelo and Yunier Riquenes gave lectures on Cuban narrative in the 21st century and how books and authors are promoted in their nation.
