Several world leaders sent their congratulatory messages to Miguel Díaz-Canel for his election as president of the Republic of Cuba, who since April 2018 served as president of the Councils of State and Ministers.

Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the merits of Miguel Díaz-Canel.

“The decision of the National Assembly shows its high political authority and recognition of its merits in solving the current tasks in the economic and social development of the country,” said Putin, quoted in a Kremlin statement.

The Russian president stressed the importance of strengthening strategic partnership relations between Russia and Cuba. “I am sure that your next visit to Russia will serve to further expand bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit in different areas,” Putin said. Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev joined the congratulation by expressing the certainty that the presidency of Díaz-Canel will strengthen the independence and sovereignty of Cuba and enable major reforms for the social and economic development of the Caribbean nation. “I want to highlight the importance of the implementation of the Russian-Cuban agreements, achieved in our recent negotiations in Havana,” Medvedev said in reference to his visit to Cuba, which he made earlier this October. The Russian Prime Minister stressed that promoting joint projects between Russia and Cuba corresponds to the interests of the two countries.

Asia

The president of China, Xi Jinping, also congratulated Miguel Díaz-Canel for his election as president of Cuba, highlighted the friendship between the two peoples and reaffirmed willingness to work together for the strengthening of bilateral ties. In his message, the dignitary assured that the two countries are good friends, partners and brothers, managed to forge a solid fraternity for more than half a century, have a sincere confidence and share the same destiny.

He also confirmed his willingness to expand bilateral cooperation with Díaz-Canel and further promote the stability of the links between the two socialist states. Xi Jinping also communicated with the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Raúl Castro, and conveyed his greetings for the success of the IV Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of Popular Power (Parliament), held on Thursday to elect leaders of the country. China – he said – attaches great importance to the development of relations with Cuba, is willing to maintain communication with Raul and together write a new chapter in the friendship of the two nations. Díaz-Canel was elected Thursday as president of the Republic of Cuba by absolute majority in a free, direct and secret vote during the parliamentary session. The legislative body also approved Salvador Valdés for the position of vice president of the Caribbean nation and both leaders received a mandate until 2023, when the current legislature of the Cuban Parliament ends.
