Date: 2021-10
More than 13,700,000 positive cases for Covid-19 have accumulated to date in the world. The deaths, unfortunately, exceed 588,000, while the recovered amount to 8.1 million. With more than 22 thousand positives reported in the last 24 hours, the United States is NOT able to contain the transmission of the virus.
Active cases in that country exceed 1,800,000, a consequence, in addition, of outbreaks due to lack of health during deconfusion. To the south of the continent, Brazil exceeds 529 thousand assets. India, for its part, reports some 347 thousand, while Russia drops to 209 thousand 168 hospitalized. South Africa, meanwhile, reports more than 145,000 cases. In America, the epicenter region of Covid at the moment, Peru is dangerously close to 100,000 cases, amid claims to the government to guarantee medical supplies to health institutions. Colombia today reports more than 87,000 cases, and Mexico some 81,000, both in the midst of a crisis that is hitting already weak health systems.
Argentina, in the middle of an iron quarantine, exceeds 61 thousand assets, and Ecuador, 34,000. In that last country, protests against the government of Lenin Moreno continue, due to the economic packages that weaken the possibilities of the population to access to medicines, food and other basic resources, in the midst of the current health crisis.
In Chile, there were new riots this morning in rejection of the government and in support of the approval in the Chamber of Deputies of a legislative project to alleviate the economic crisis generated by Covid-19. Old claims reappearing for Covid-19.
Chileans who for years have disagreed with pension fund managers, AFPs, private companies in charge of managing retirement money, saw these days a halo of light in their battle. It is that the Covid-19 created economic difficulties also in Chile, a country with particular capitalist models, established since the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship and based on northern experimentation, under the influence of economists trained in the United States, known as the Chicago Boys .
Today, 8 out of 10 Chileans support the law approved by Congress that allows the one-time extraction of 10 percent of the pension fund. The measure does not please President Sebastián Piñera. To prevent it, he tried to disburse a financial aid package, but his proposal, described as late, insufficient and not comprehensive, did not have acceptance either, as it leaves out a large number of those affected by the crisis.
The protests against the government began on Tuesday, with a massive and violence that was not appreciated since the protests started in October last year that left thirty people dead and thousands injured. Today Chileans are on the streets again, even with the curfew that governs the entire country and the total quarantine in force in Santiago since May 15.
Almost 100 prisoners since Tuesday is the balance left by the protests. They are protesting against a government that does not respond to the interests of the majority, and in favor of measures that defy the laws in force in the country since the dictatorship, even though that nation has supposedly been living in democracy for years.
