Date: 2021-10
The traditional whale slaughter was celebrated once again in Feroe Island in Denmark, leaving at least 180 specimens slaughtered. The inhabitants of this region, located in North Atlantic make every summer the so called ¨Grindadrap¨ where hundreds of whales and dolphins are led to beaches to be stabbed and harpooned.
After this termination, where adults and children participate the waters of the harbor of Sandavágur in Vágar Island, are totally shaded in red.
The aim of this event, with centuries of practice, is to distribute meat and fat of these species among the inhabitants. However, due to pollution of the waters, experts assure this meat is thrown away.
How does it happen?
The schools of whales and dolphins swim nearby the seashore in their migration period. The fishermen take advantage, surround them and led them to low deep waters of the harbor.
There they remained trapped and begins the slaughter, where participate even five year old children. The witnesses have told cruel scenes of these beheaded mammals twisting in pain among waters shaded in blood.
The environmentalists
The Sea Shepherd organization, which takes care of the protection of the sea fauna, has tried several times to stop this practice in the Feroe with the opening of several legal processes which have not had any results. Likewise, another environmental groups have broadcasted the images of the slaughter to alert about this practice.
The portal Velvet Pets reported that several activists were arrested in early August by local authorities since they protested for the death of 180 water specimens.
