Date: 2021-10
In Peru, the presidential candidate, Pedro Castillo, was proclaimed the winner of this Sunday’s elections in the South American nation. With more than 99 percent of the votes counted, the leftist candidate leads his rival Keiko Fujimori, with more than 70,000 votes.
Castillo, from the Peru Libre Party, assured that his government will respect democracy, the current constitution and will work for financial and economic stability. Meanwhile, Fuerza Popular candidate Keiko Fujimori asked the electoral authorities to annul 802 voting records, about 200 thousand votes, under accusations without evidence of irregularities and electoral fraud.
After calls on social networks for the military to prevent Castillo from coming to power, the Armed Forces urged Peruvians to respect the results of the ballot and reaffirmed their commitment to respect the will of the citizen.
The National Office of Electoral Processes denies the possibility of fraud in the elections, and affirms that the process is proceeding with transparency. The entity assures that it will not declare a winner until the counting of one hundred percent of the ballots is finished.
