Date: 2021-10
Social movements, indigenous people and the people in general launched themselves on Monday night to the streets of Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, to reject the neoliberal measures required by the International Monetary Fund and applied by the government of LenĂn Moreno, who was forced to take shelter in the bastion on the right in Guayaquil.
Social unrest and strong repression measures
The few live images that come from the events in the Ecuadorian capital, silenced by the big news media, show a massive display of social unrest and strong repression measures by the authorities.
State of exception to try to control popular unrest
The Moreno government imposed the state of emergency to try to control the discomfort from rising fuel prices, among other measures agreed by the national authorities with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in exchange for access to multi-million dollar loans.
The measure generated increases of up to 123% in the prices of the most used fuels. The gallon of 3.79 liters of diesel went from 1.03 to 2.30 dollars and that of common gasoline from 1.85 to 2.40 dollars.
Several thousand indigenous people and peasants began arriving in Quito on Monday prior to a protest on Wednesday with other social organizations such as unions.
Protesters take oil fields
The Government of Ecuador announced the suspension of operations in three oil fields in the northwest of the country due to protests against economic measures.
