Final day of the IX UNEAC Congress with the presence of Díaz-Canel

With the presence of Miguel Díaz- Canel Bermúdez, president of the Councils of State and Ministers, the final day of the IX Congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), with headquarters in the Palace of Conventions of this capital.

The meeting, which will be held from the 28th, ends the organic process initiated in 2018, which has served to analyze in depth the main difficulties in the functioning of the organization and for Cuban artists and intellectuals to raise their concerns.

The plenary began with a reminder of Fidel Castro Ruz, because today marks the anniversary of the speech known as “Words to the intellectuals”, fruit of the open dialogue of the then Prime Minister with intellectuals and artists.

Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of Popular Power, also attended the Sunday session; Victor Gaute, Head of the Office of Ideological Affairs of the Central Committee of the PCC; Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture; Miguel Barnet, president of UNEAC; and the intellectuals Eusebio Leal, Abel Prieto Jiménez and Graciela Pogolotti.

Under the slogan “Without culture there is no possible freedom”, the almost 250 delegates participated the day before in six work commissions on topics related to artistic creation and its relationship with institutions; the social projection of culture; social media and networks; tourism and market; artistic teaching and relationship with young creators. The last commission debated the statutes that will govern the work of the UNEAC in the future.

The event has fostered the exchange between artists and writers on fundamental issues such as the improvement of artistic education, and the achievement of greater participation of the organization in territorial initiatives.
