The historian of the City of Havana, Eusebio Leal, one of the most recognized Cuban intellectuals, is now part of the important American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA & S).

Cuba’s ambassador to the United States, José Ramón Cabañas, represented the outstanding scholar on Saturday at the initiation ceremony held by the academy based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in which Leal became an International Honorary Member.

It is an honor to represent Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler at the ceremony of initiation of new members, the diplomat said in his Twitter account, and described the award given to the historian as very timely recognition, when just over a month is missing for the celebration of the 500th anniversary from Havana

Last April it was announced that the intellectual of the Caribbean country was part of the list of 42 International Honorary Members of 23 countries chosen by the institution this year to highlight their outstanding achievements’ in the academic world, arts, business, the government and public affairs’.

In addition to the Cuban, other distinguished figures with this recognition are the parasitologist Nadira Karunaweera, from Sri Lanka; the academic and former diplomat Kishore Mahbubani of Singapore; and theologian Mona Siddiqui, from the United Kingdom.

“We are pleased to recognize the excellence of our new members, celebrate their convincing achievements and invite them to join the Academy and contribute to their work,” David Oxtoby, the president of the institution created in 1780 by John Adams, said in a statement John Hancock, and 60 other leaders and scholars.

The AAA & S, which concludes this weekend a weekend dedicated to incorporating its new members, is identified as an honorary society and as an independent research center that brings together leaders from all disciplines, professions and perspectives to address significant challenges.

According to its digital page, it has chosen more than 13,500 members since its founding in 1780, and every year more than 1,300 nominations are considered, of which less than 250 are selected under criteria that respond to the excellence of those people in their field and a record of continuous achievements.

When performing a search on the institution’s website, Leal already appears as one of its members in the area of Humanities and Arts, in the History specialty.

Among the American and international figures that have integrated the academy membership are Benjamin Franklin (elected in 1781), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1864), Maria Mitchell (1848), Charles Darwin (1874), Albert Einstein (1924), Margaret Mead (1948), Martin Luther King, Jr. (1966), Nelson Mandela (2009) and Francis Ford Coppola (2010).

“To the pride of 11 million Cubans, the name and work of Dr. Eusebio Leal joins the American Academy of Arts and Letters to those of personalities such as: Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein,” Cabañas said in another Tweet.
