Date: 2021-09

The 40 members of the Brigade of the Henry Reeve Contingent, specialized in situations of disasters and serious epidemics, who provided medical assistance to the people of Mozambique, after the passage of the powerful cyclone Idai, last March, arrived in Havana in the early hours of the morning this Sunday.

As expressed in the welcoming ceremony, the doctors are continuators of the tradition of disinterest and solidarity that characterize Cuba and the medical collaboration that the island offers since these programs began in 1963 with the dispatch of the first brigade to Algeria.

José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health (Minsap), highlighted the work done in difficult conditions, as well as the satisfaction of seeing them return with the duty fulfilled.

The gratitude is not only from that sister nation, but from Cuba, he said, because in addition to providing a very positive result in terms of medical care, they also leave an imprint of the Revolution and the Cuban people in Mozambique.

Marcia Cobas Ruiz, vice-minister of Minsap, highlighted the dignity, sensitivity, professionalism and dedication of medical personnel, and noted that the formation of this brigade, or its preparation and performance, provided experiences for others of its kind that also provide service in the outside and for the next to be constituted.

Cuban medical collaboration on this occasion was carried out by deploying a field hospital with a surgical and epidemiological clinical profile, which offered services in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, traumatology and clinical laboratory, among others.During their stay in Mozambique, the brigade carried out 22 thousand 259 consultations and 331 surgical interventions. Equally, actions to combat malaria were developed, an activity in which more than 17,000 homes were visited and more than 50,000 people were benefited.Cuba does not know of hatred, but of infinite love and dedication for the most needy, said on behalf of the newcomers Dr. Rolando Piloto, Chief of the brigade. We are specialists in sharing what we have, and not giving what we have left, said the doctor.
