I pulled out the book when I sat down on p14, it was a 1 hour trip and maybe I had time to read the last chapter of that novel. Next to me, a boy was surfing on Whatsapp, the lady in front was talking about the last Turkish novel she was seeing and I was in those pages, trying to discover other realities there, of reading the pages of a good friend.
Reading is a habit that must be acquired by children from childhood and not only because of the influence of the school, but also, and most importantly, of the family. I still remember the first Book Fair that I visited, I was still 6 years old and my parents bought me not only picture books and jigsaw puzzles, but they made me get close to good Cuban and international children’s literature such as The Valley of Pájara Pinta, The wizard of Oz o The incredible adventures of Chirri, stories told in these books that developed my imagination, improved my spelling and since childhood I instilled that love for letters.
The importance of reading is often forgotten, after new technologies have broken into Cuban national life. The reading of a good book, prevents Alzheimer’s, improves memory and expands vocabulary, in addition to providing more culture, as readers become familiar with different times and characters that existed in real life or know fantastic worlds.
You can read a good digital book, because maybe it is not published in a national publishing house, but many times many young people prefer to watch the movie or the series that tells a certain story before leafing through the book, forgetting that what they are seeing, it is the interpretation of another person about the story previously told in the book.
A few months ago The International Book Fair of Havana, tried to bring the love of reading to the public, but I think more than that, this event has become a way to raise money selling food, school supplies and light literature, in deficit of varied offers of Cuban writers and also with prices of good universal literature too high.
The Cuban Editorial System is not in a good moment at present and despite its shortcomings, it must work on more options to bring children and young people to the habit of reading. Steps in favor are the promotion and sale of books and magazines of the summer readings, to which the Provincial Book and Literature Center convenes, to be held on 23rd Street, from G to Infanta, where the public can also interact with different authors, among others. This summer reading should be a good option for enjoyment and learning not only for adults, but for children and young people. Only a good book can provide so much knowledge. The pages of this good friend should not be ignored by anyone.
