Cuba registered 1,087 new cases of coronavirus for a total of 148,918 people infected with COVID-19 since the start of the health emergency in March 2020, reported the island’s Ministry of Health (MINSAP).

The country also lamented 8 deaths from the contagious disease, for a general balance of 1,011 deaths since the detection of the first cases of COVID-19. Of the new cases, 1055 were autochthonous with a slight decrease in relation to the day on Saturday.

In addition, 26 of the imported cases were Cuban travelers from Russia. Havana, the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, reported 408 cases followed by Santiago de Cuba province with 145 new infections. 44

Dr. Francisco Durán, national director of hygiene and epidemiology at MINSAP, called for a more responsible behavior in the care of minors. “Again a very high number in intensive care rooms, 173 in total,” said the specialist, who assured that the restriction measures in relation to COVID-19 are not met with all the necessary rigor.

This takes place at the same time that a sanitary intervention takes place in Havana and more than 2 million doses have been supplied with the vaccine candidates of national production.

The Caribbean nation hopes to immunize about 70 percent of its population against COVID-19 by the month of August.
