Date: 2021-08

Not because it was expected – he had been fighting a disease for months – the news of the death of Alejandro Sabella, 66, hit less hard in Argentina, days after the tragic death of Diego Armando Maradona.

‘The Professor’ was well liked for his jovial and simple character. He was the coach of the Argentine National Team that reached the final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, in which he lost 1-0 against Germany in extra time.

Alejandro was also a symbol for Estudiantes de La Plata, as a player and as a coach. With the pricks he was champion, as DT, of the Libertadores 2009 and champion of Liga 2010. Sabella also championed, as a player, with River and was one of the first Argentines to perform in England

In Brazil 2014, he was about to be crowned the third technical world champion of his country, along with Menotti (1978) and Bilardo (1986), but a goal from the German Mario Götze in extra time prevented him. His facet as a player is also fantastic. It was crack.

In River he began to stand out as a substitute for Beto Alonso. An elegant, talented southpaw, very skilled. Bilardo later brought him to Student, where he became a symbol and league champion on several occasions. As a coach, he played a very difficult game against Messi’s Barça in the 2009 Club World Cup final (1-2 final).
