VIII Caribbean Summit: high-level segment meets in Nicaragua

En la jornada de este viernes, los mandatarios y sus delegados deberán aprobar la Declaración de Managua, documento centrado en fortalecer el propósito fundacional de la organización de fungir como mecanismo para consulta, cooperación y la acción concertada en las esferas del comercio, el transporte, el turismo sostenible y los desastres naturales en el área Caribe.

The high-level segment of the VIII Summit of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) is being held today in the Nicaraguan capital with the assistance of heads of state and government of countries in the region.

On the day, the leaders and their delegates must approve the Declaration of Managua, a document focused on strengthening the founding purpose of the organization as a mechanism for consultation, cooperation and concerted action in the areas of trade, transport, sustainable tourism and natural disasters in the Caribbean area.

If approved, the agreement will be in force during the period 2019-2021 and will also encourage actions for the promotion of education, culture, sports and the continuous process of strengthening the identity of the countries of the area.

The 8th ACS Summit will be held under the motto Uniting efforts in the Caribbean to face the consequences of climate change, with the assistance of the 25 Member States and nine partners.

Also attending the meeting are representatives of 17 observer countries and six international organizations, including the European Union, the Caribbean Community, and the Central American Integration System.

Cuban President attends Summit of the Association of Caribbean States The president of the Councils of State and Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, today attends the high-level segment of the VIII Summit of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

Through his official account on the social network Twitter, Diaz-Canel also expressed that Cuba will maintain its commitment to the process of revitalization of the Association of Caribbean States, which should continue to advance as a platform for dialogue, political coordination and cooperation.

For its part, the Foreign Ministry of Cuba assured in its own social network that it is urgent to fight and defend a Latin America and Caribbean united in its diversity in which respect, relations of friendship and cooperation prevail, as established in the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

In this VIII Summit the members celebrate the 25th anniversary of the organization whose main objective is to serve as a mechanism for consultation, cooperation and concerted action in the field of trade, transport, sustainable tourism and natural disasters in the area from the Caribbean. Its member states are Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, San Cristóbal and Snow, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. Aruba, Curaçao, (France, on behalf of French Guyana, San Bartolomé and San Martín), Guadalupe, The Netherlands, on behalf of Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius, Martinique, Sint Maarten, Turks and Caicos Islands.
