In the midst of the new coronavirus pandemic, the arrival of tourists to Cuba decreased by 95.5 percent during the months of January and February compared to the same period last year, said the academic and university professor José Luis Perelló on Monday in interview with the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

“During the first two months of 2021, some 35,600 international travelers arrived on the island, representing 4.5 percent of the 792, 507 foreign visitors totaled at the end of February 2020,” the specialist reported.

Perelló commented that the revival of tourism in Cuba will not only depend on the control of the pandemic at the domestic level but also on the success of the vaccination processes in Canada, Spain, Germany, England and France, the main source markets for tourists to the island.

He pointed out that the recovery of the aeronautical sector, as well as of the income of travelers, is essential for the return to normality of international tourism after “the hard blow” caused by the health emergency.”People could be immunized and have no income to travel,” he added.

The Ministry of Tourism on the island reported at the beginning of 2021 that just over 1 million international travelers arrived in Cuba last year, a figure below the 4.5 million projected by the government before the appearance of SARS-COV- 2 in national territory.

Cuba surpassed the figure of one million tourists in 1996, and reached a record 4.7 million visitors at the end of 2017 amid the increase in the United States blockade against the island during the first year of the Trump administration.

Before the detection of the first cases of COVID-19 in Cuba, the tourism industry represented more than 10 percent of the Gross Domestic Product of the Caribbean economy. The island reported 734 positive cases and three deaths due to the new coronavirus this Monday, for a total of 62, 206 infections and 373 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
