Reiterate condemnation of activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Acting Cooperation, Josep Borrell, reiterated this Thursday in a meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez, at the United Nations, the position contrary to Spain’s activation of title III of the Helms law- Burton

In the meeting they have held during the celebration of the ministerial week of the United Nations General Assembly, both ministers have addressed issues of bilateral, regional and multilateral interest, as reported in a note sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and cooperation.

Borrell reiterated the Spanish position contrary to the activation of title III of the Helms-Burton Act “which discourages and penalizes trade and investments of third-state companies, also causing serious damage to the well-being of the Cuban population.”

The European Union rejects unilateral coercive measures

The note adds that “the Government of Spain and the EU reject these unilateral coercive measures contrary to international law, and work together with the European Commission, the rest of the Member States and other international partners in adopting the necessary measures to mitigate this decision”. During their meeting both ministers have also reviewed the crisis in Venezuela and “have expressed their support for the negotiating process under the mediation of Norway and their interest in these talks being resumed in the near future, in the conviction that there is no another way out of the crisis than the result of a political negotiation between Venezuelans. ”Memorandum of Understanding Cuba- Spain

The Cuban minister explained during the meeting the recent evolution of the economic situation in Cuba including information on the energy issue. Both ministers agreed to “continue working to deepen bilateral relations.” In that sense, in the next month of October, Minister Borrell will travel to Cuba “for the holding of bilateral consultations contemplated in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the President of the Government during his visit to Cuba,” adds the official note.
