The Ukrainian chess player Vassily Ivanchuk won again in the International Tournament José Raúl Capablanca, based in Havana, after dominating the elite group with seven units, local media reported today.
‘Chuky’ reached the last day with the crown in doubt, but he won against the Indian Adhiban Baskaran in the tenth round and achieved his eighth crown in these games, in which he has become a regular participant.
“I like to play in Cuba, I like the organization of the tournaments in Cuba and the people from here,” said the Ukrainian when he was known as the monarch of this edition of the event, which is recognized as the oldest in America.
An aggressive and dynamic game
The experienced juggler reigned again with his aggressive and dynamic game, relegating in this occasion to the second place the American Samuel Sevian, who reached 6.5 points, like the Spanish David Anton, third by the tiebreaker system.
In positions four and five were Indian Adhiban and Cuban Carlos Daniel Albornoz, both with 4.5 stripes; and the group also the Antillean Yuri Gónzalez closed, with three points.
Arnaldo Fernández won the open group
The open group brought surprises, among them that of the young Cuban Arnaldo Fernández, who beat the favorite on the last date and also host Isán Ortiz, to complete eight points out of 10 possible and dominate the section.
Michel Alejandro Díaz finished in second place, with the same record as Fernández, while Lelys Martínez, with 7.5 points, was third.
At the closing ceremony of the event, in addition to the awards, tribute was paid to the great José Raúl Capablanca, one of the greatest players in history and whose name is the name of the contest that the Ukrainian Ivanchuk has won eight times.
