['Please Enter Your Name Here']
Date: None
Prison convicts from 17 North American states started a hunger strike and a labor stoppage in protest for the situation of the penitentiary system which is considered abusive.
Convicts demand better work conditions
The strike, programmed until September 9th, was made as an answer to the turmoil recorded in maximum security prison in South Carolina where seven people died last April 15th during a prison riot.
Among the complaints of the strikers figure the compulsory work with a payment of 4 cents the hour, terrible life conditions, deaths in prison, the privacy of the right to vote, the limited access to rehabilitation, the reform of sentences and definitely the end of what they consider the prison slavery.
The U.S is the country with the highest number of convicts in the world, almost 2.3 million, what represent the 5th part of the total of convicts of the world.
