New popular demonstrations are planned for this Friday in Ecuador in the framework of the permanent resistance declared by indigenous movements against economic measures, described as neoliberal, that affect large sectors of the population
While a mobilization of nationalities and social organizations is convened in the city of Loja, in this capital the arrival of a contingent of various ancestral peoples is expected, who will join the thousands of indigenous people who have led the protests since last Wednesday. Under the slogan of “El Paro Sigue”, the actions on the streets are maintained, taken since last October 3 by thousands of people, distributed in numerous parts of the national territory, to tell the government led by Lenín Moreno that he must respond to the needs of the population and not under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The main demands are: to repeal Decree 883, which released the price of extra gasoline and diesel, as well as to reverse in a package of tax and labor reforms, harmful to those who receive less income. They also require the executive to end the police repression unleashed against the mobilized, which have left at least five dead and many injured.Determined to remain in the fight, those who oppose the recent actions of the national administration reject any possibility of dialogue, given the executive’s refusal to suspend the provision that eliminated the fuel subsidy. To sit down at the negotiating table, the popular sectors also call for the immediate resignation of the government ministers, María Paula Romo, and Defense, Oswaldo Jarrín, who are responsible for the repressive wave, and the departure of the IMF from the country.
The entry into force of this provision, immediately triggered the food prices of the basic basket and raised the value of tickets on public transport. The so-called “package” also includes reducing the salary for renewed temporary contracts by 20 percent and reducing the vacation period for employees of public companies from 30 to 15 days. Likewise, it proposes to reduce tariffs, eliminate the advance of the income tax and lower the tariff on the exit of foreign exchange, regulations that benefit the most affluent in this Andean territory.
