Cuba: 160th Anniversary of the Artistic and Literary Lyceum of Guanabacoa

This Wednesday marks the 160th anniversary of the founding of the Guanabacoa Artistic and Literary Lyceum.

At the beginning of the year 1861, it was decided to process with the highest representative of the island, the creation of an Artistic-Literary Society in Guanabacoa. On the night of June 16th, 1861, the Artistic and Literary Lyceum was inaugurated, a site where the most prestigious national figures, including Rafael María de Mendive, José de la Luz y Caballero, and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, among others. They had a space where they shared their ideas, their art and their texts.

The presence of the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, was fundamental on the site, which was evidenced by his appointment as Optional Partner of the Literature section in November 1878 and Secretary on January 15, 1879. In the latter year Martí gave his first public speech there.
