Lava flows from the Mount Nyiragongo volcano, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, today caused the death of five people in traffic accidents in the evacuation of thousands of people from the city of Goma, the main city in the east of the country.
The Ministry of Emergency Management of the African country reported that more than 3,500 Congolese have crossed the border into Rwanda.
Meanwhile, the country’s prime minister, Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, called an emergency meeting in Kinsasa, the capital, where the government activated an evacuation plan for Goma.
The previous Nyiragongo eruption in 2002 killed 250 people and left 120,000 homeless.
