Cuba exposes consequences of the US blockade to the UN high commissioner

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, spoke with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to whom he explained the consequences of the US blockade on the daily life of the island.
Rodríguez reminded the official about the human rights violations that the economic, commercial and financial fence represents for the people of the largest island of the Antilles. During the meeting, framed in the high-level segment of the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council, the head of the Cuban delegation reiterated to the commissioner her country’s commitment to the promotion and inclusive protection of all people’s rights.
In a respectful environment, other topics of common interest in human rights were reviewed and Cuba’s permanent willingness to cooperate with United Nations procedures and mechanisms in human rights that have universal application, on non-discriminatory basis, of strict respect for our sovereignty and with recognition of the right of self-determination. Earlier, the chancellor of the island intervened in the Council, where he criticized the unilateralism of the United States and denounced the resurgence of the blockade imposed on Cuba for 60 years, with the declared purpose of rendering hunger and despair to its inhabitants.
He also announced the candidacy of the Caribbean nation for the period 2021-2023 in the Human Rights Council, an organ of 47 member states elected by the UN General Assembly based on an equitable geographical distribution.
