The Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, reported the immigration inadmission to the elected president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammatei, after he tried to enter Venezuela with a passport that endorses him as an Italian citizen.

“The fact that an elected president of an independent Republic, intended to enter another country under a citizenship other than that of the country where he will hold the presidency, drew the attention of the corresponding officials, who proceeded to apply the identity verification protocol and perform the rigorous questions about the reason for his visit, ”the Foreign Minister said yesterday.

Alejandro Giammattei planned to visit Caracas to meet with opposition leader Juan Guaidó and other politicians in the country. He arrived at dawn on a flight from the Panamanian airline Copa to Simón Bolívar de Maiquetía International Airport.

“They did not let us into Venezuela. They escorted us to the door and got us on the plane, ”Giammattei said inside the commercial plane that took him to Panama. The Central American politician expressed his support for Guaido, who had come to the airport to receive him. In another video, he said that during his visit to Caracas he planned to invite the self-proclaimed to his inauguration scheduled for January 14, 2020.

The Venezuelan government also said that it declared Giammattei’s inadmissibility because the trip was a private visit and “since there is no proof of invitation by the National Executive, nor any coordination from the Guatemalan embassy,” he was not allowed to Entrance to the country. The sovereignty of a country is sacred.

Arreaza said that the visit of a high-level character requires bilateral coordination in terms of agenda, security and issuance of visas, “it is essential to present credentials and identity documents of the country in which it serves as Government”, he added.

“Today, Day of Indigenous Resistance, Venezuela reiterates its call to maintain relations between States in the framework of greater respect and International Law,” concludes the statement.
