Just when 60 years have passed since the proclamation of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, the Eighth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) began, chaired by the First Secretary of the Central Committee, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz.

With the presence also of the President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, member of the Political Bureau, the most important meeting of the party organization that brings together delegates from all over the country is held, strictly complying with the sanitary measures imposed by the pandemic of the COVID-19.

Vital issues for the economic, political and social development of the nation will be debated by the participants in this meeting, which will last until April 19, the date on which Cuba will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victory of Playa Girón. This opening day opens the way to four days of analysis in the midst of a national scenario full of challenges, mainly in the economic sphere, with an eye also on the complex international context.

According to the planned agenda, three working commissions will focus their debates on crucial issues that range from updating the Conceptualization of the Cuban economic and social model of socialist development, to the implementation of the Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy of the Party and the Revolution.

The results in the economic and social order achieved since the Seventh Congress, which was held in April 2016, the functioning of the Party, the ideological activity and the rigorous examination of cadre politics, will also be at the center of the analyzes of the delegates. The legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, his thinking and the indelible lessons he left in the militancy, the commitment to the historical generation that brought the party organization here, the defense of the socialist character of the Revolution, proclaimed 60 years ago, and the challenges that this moment entails for the youngest who will inherit the leadership of our Communist Party, will mark these four days of work in the Continuity Congress.
