This week, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, announced that that organization will gradually expand its military mission in Iraq.Stoltenberg specified that the 500 instructors, advisers and auxiliary personnel deployed in that country will go up to around 4,000. He added that this is intended to give continuity to the training of the Iraqi security forces to “support them in the fight against terrorism, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of that state. However, history shows that this discourse is not congruent with the actions undertaken by NATO, especially if it is a region like the Middle East.
