On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, Karla Quintana Osuna, head of the National People Search Commission, released this information, derived from a report that covers from the end of 2006 until August 14, 2019:
“We are giving these horror data with all the respect and responsibility from the federal State. It is the first time that this data is given by the federal government, the first time that an official recognition of the number of clandestine graves is officially made, ”Quintana said during the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
According to the official, from 2006 to August 14, 2019, 4,874 bodies had been found.
40,000 missing
The undersecretary of Interior, Alejandro Encinas, said that the previous federal administrations tried to hide the magnitude of the tragedy of the disappeared. “Given the absence and omissions of the State, it was the families who assumed the search,” said Encinas.
The undersecretary explained that President López Obrador instructed to accept the competence of the United Nations Committee against Enforced Disappearances of the United Nations to issue reports on the matter, in addition to the Mexican Government making an invitation for said agency to make an official visit to Mexico in the second half of 2020.
