The current Cuban novel gives visibility to this phenomenon, based on terrible events against young women … According to the national survey on gender equality conducted three years ago in the 15 provinces of the country and the special municipality Isla de la Juventud, 51.9% of the population under study perceives that violence against women in Cuba is low, 30% valued that it is much and 8.9% declared that violence against women does not exist in our country. Which shows that people recognize its existence to a lesser or greater degree, even if they have not suffered it personally I remember when this survey was published, It was conceived as a research of greater scope that would make it possible, mainly, to identify the advances in gender equality in Cuba and the manifestations of inequalities that still exist.
It was prepared by the Federation of Cuban Women and the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) and among its contributions, it highlights that violence was not recognized by the majority of the population among the three main problems of men and women in our country, but 10.5% identified it as a problem for women. And it is the oriental women who most point it out this way, compared to those in the other regions of the country.Why? Because of machismo, the stereotypes that still exist about the roles that correspond to rural women … The type of violence against women that prevails in relationships is psychological and, secondly, much less frequently, economic violence.
Violence against women and girls can take many forms, from domestic aggressions, constant disqualification, the threat. The active incorporation of women into society has been one of the most important objectives of the Cuban Revolution, a work promoted by the Commander in Chief. The empowerment achieved by women in our country, the guarantee of a set of rights, and the work led by the Federation of Cuban Women, in favor of equality and non-violence throughout all these years, allows us to look at the phenomenon today in better conditions than other nations in the region. And it materializes in various policies, programs, and social and economic actions. But it persists. Gender violence is considered as a sexist act that has or may have physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, occupational, economic or patrimonial damage or suffering, whether they occur in the public or private spheres.How do you express yourself in some Cuban homes?
Although the majority of the Cuban population does not justify violence against women or men, those who do declare as a motive “when they are unfaithful”. Among the causes for which people explain the break with their previous relationship – more women than men – is violence. It is they who generally experience these situations more. And the fact that they have decided to dissolve the link for this reason indicates an awareness of the phenomenon. But many others do not ask for help, they prefer not to show their personal stories, when there are ways to be advised in the community.
