The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, affirmed today that the Helms-Burton Law will not stop the Cuban people from moving forward, despite its purpose of preventing the development of the Greater Antillean Island and attacking its sovereignty.
Through his account on the social network Twitter, @DiazCanelB, the president said that the main objective of the United States to apply it is to economically suffocate the Greater Antilles.
On repeated occasions, Havana has denounced the increase of Washington’s hostility against Latin American nations and the imposition of new sanctions on Cuba.
The Cuban government repudiates such actions and considers them a clear step towards a confrontational course, using as spearhead the resurgence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed for almost six decades.
Last April 17, the administration of Donald Trump reinforced the siege with the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act (in force since the previous day), with which it is committed to economic suffocation as an instrument for regime change.
He also reported that it will increase restrictions on travel by Americans to Cuba and limit the remittances sent by Cubans living in that northern nation to their relatives.
