Tourists from the Cuban assisted cruise ship arrive in the UK

Passengers on the British cruise ship affected by Covid-19, and whom Cuba helped repatriate, arrived this Thursday in the United Kingdom from Havana on charter flights from British Airways.

The company Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, owner of the boat, said in a statement that three of the four planes contracted to evacuate the 682 tourists from MS Braemar landed on Thursday at London’s Heathrow airport.

The fourth aircraft, which transported infected patients and people with symptoms of contracting the new coronavirus, was diverted to Boscombe Down Air Base, in the English county of Wiltshire, from where they will be sent to health facilities.

In the text, the director general of the shipping company, Peter Deer, reiterated his gratitude to the Cuban government and people for having agreed to receive the ship, after several Caribbean countries and the United States prohibited him from docking at their ports.

In the name of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Cuban authorities, the port of Mariel and the people of Cuba for their support, said Deer, who affirmed that the gesture of the Caribbean island will not be forgotten.

The businessman also highlighted the support provided by the British authorities to achieve the evacuation of tourists. After pointing out that Havana acted altruistically in response to the request made by its British counterpart, the newspaper highlighted that it is not the first time that the West Indian country supports the world in an emergency.
