“Cuba dismisses with pain and respect Rosa Aurora Freijanes, ordered Ana Betancourt, one of the brave women who shook the world, denouncing terrorism against Cuba and defending the freedom of the Five,” the president wrote on Twitter.
In addition, the head of state shared an article from the Granma newspaper where the work of the activist and former wife of Fernando González Llort, one of the heroes who served prison in the United States for defending Cuba against terrorist actions, is discussed.
“In multiple interviews, she strongly denounced the obstacles that the United States government imposed on her to visit Fernando and the rigged obstacles to the judicial process that they had experienced,” the Cuban newspaper published. In September 1998, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, René González, and Fernando González Llort were arrested and convicted in northern territory on charges against US national security.
In the opinion of justice experts and international activists, the court was unable to prove the charges against the group. Cuba led a broad movement of international solidarity in favor of the liberation of these heroes.
On December 17, 2014, the then president, Raúl Castro, announced the return of those still imprisoned, as well as the beginning of a series of steps that would allow the opening of embassies and the establishment of bilateral ties.
