Díaz-Canel: economic dynamics in 2019 should boost the country’s development

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, in a meeting with the Council of Ministers, called for a growing dynamic of the economy in 2019 that guarantees a greater impact on the population’s food, information, housing and transportation.

In this regard, he specified that a follow-up to the progress of the investments will be made month by month, in order to analyze the ones that culminate and their results, in order to evaluate the impact foreseen in the feasibility studies.

According to Díaz-Canel, another key sector for the progress of the country is that of exports, on which he urged to fulfill the plans and to add those that can.

“Everyone has to look for what they can export and, of course, collect it,” he said in the Council of Ministers, a forum that also discussed the efficient use of water, debts to be paid and receivable, and internal control.

Regarding agriculture, he insisted on the increase of short-cycle plantings to have food more immediately and continue developing the remaining crops, with the purpose of fulfilling the municipal self-supply program and the free sale of root vegetables.

In the session, the Minister of Economy and Planning, Alejandro Gil Fernández, presented the report on the behavior of the Cuban economy at the end of January.

Gil highlighted the arrival in the country of one thousand 235 motor vehicles, as part of investments planned in 2018, including 221 Yutong buses and 504 microbuses, 401 of these latter for taxi modalities per route. According to the owner, in the analyzed period there were no impacts to the electricity service due to generation deficit during the maximum demand schedule.

As for tourism, reported that the plan was met at 102 percent, with the arrival of 489 thousand 629 visitors, representing a growth of nine percent, with the rise of major markets such as Canada and Russia.

Samuel Rodiles Planas, president of the Institute of Physical Planning, presented an update of the universe of human settlements concentrated in Cuba during the period 2012-2018.

This document -Diaz-Canel emphasized-, together with the Plan of Territorial and Urban Planning, must become a tool for the planning and analysis of different issues of the economy and society.
