Cuban films will participate in Oscar and Goya awards

The Cuban-Canadian film A translator and the national “Innocence” are the proposals selected to represent Cuba at the Oscar and Goya awards, respectively.

The films were chosen as the official proposals after two debates of the selection commission constituted for this purpose and coordinated by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), says the Cubacine digital site.

A translator, directed by the brothers Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso, would choose to be included in the category of Best Foreign Film in the 92nd edition of the Oscars, a laureate awarded annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States, and which will have his gala on February 9, 2020 at the Dolby Theater, in Hollywood, California.

The film has an international cast in which the performances of the Brazilian Rodrigo Santoro, and the Cubans Eslinda Núñez, Jorge Molina and Osvaldo Doimeadiós stand out.

A translator was developed in Havana in the late 1980s, when the Caribbean island received hundreds of children from the then Soviet Union to be treated for radiation exposure resulting from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.

The film, produced in 2018, has been screened at major festivals dedicated to the seventh art and recognized, among others, with the award for Best Director of the Shanghai International Festival, and nominations in the Best Actor and Prime Opera categories of the Ibero-American Film Award Phoenix.¨Innocence¨, a work of great acceptance in the Cuban public On the other hand, Inocencia, a film directed by Alejandro Gil, will opt for the Goya award in the Best Ibero-American film section, an event that will be held in its 34th edition in the Spanish city of Malaga in January 2020.

The film has been shown in countries like Spain and the United States; and won the special prize at the 40th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, and its director won the Best Director award at the 20th edition of the Havana Film Festival in New York.
