The results of the Maternal and Child Program (PAMI) in Cuba, beyond figures and indicators, define the life and future of the country. On the priorities accorded to this important issue by the Cuban Government and the measures taken to achieve a better performance, a broad debate was discussed this Monday during a working meeting with the main authorities of the Public Health sector, headed by the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz.

Although Cuba has recorded in recent years figures of infant mortality that place it within the 35 countries of the world with the lowest rate, the benefits offered by the Primary Health Care System and facilities could be used more than for its best performance exist in the greater of the Antilles.

As it is already known – reiterated the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda – at the end of 2019 in the country there was a child mortality of 5.0 per thousand live births, higher than the rate of 4.0 reached in the previous year Such reality had as fundamental causes the complications associated with premature birth, intrauterine growth retardation and teenage pregnancy. Hence, during the course of his intervention, Portal Miranda not only referred to the indisputable results obtained in maternal and child care services, but also, critically and objectively, evaluated the main deficiencies that currently remain in the care primary health, as well as the implementation of concrete actions to reverse this situation.

Among the latter, he highlighted the strengthening of the work of the cadres; the consolidation of the genetic services network; the constant professional development and training of health professionals and workers; the application of science and technological innovation; and the development of an effective communication strategy, aimed at women of childbearing age, their partners and relatives. Without complying with the results – he said – at the end of January 11 thousand 697 live births are reported and the infant mortality rate is reduced from 5.2, obtained in the same period of 2019, to 3.8.
