The Virtual Summit “United against COVID-19” of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is held on Monday May 4 by videoconference, chaired by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. The event takes place in the format of the Contact Group, which includes representatives of the different regions that make up the Movement.
1- Why the appointment is called by Azerbaijan? The Republic of Azerbaijan assumed the Presidency of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries for the period 2019-2022, at the Baku NAM Summit, which was held from October 25 to 26, 2019, at a time that requires concerted and effective responses to the challenges of the contemporary world. The Azeri presidency coincides with the 65th anniversary of the Bandung Principles (2020) and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the NAM (2021).
2- What is the purpose of this Virtual Summit called by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev? According to AzerNews, the Head of the Department of Foreign Policy Affairs of the Presidential Administration, Hikmat Hajiyev, pointed out that it is important to strengthen global solidarity, mobilize the efforts of States and international organizations in the fight against the new coronavirus pandemic . “We hope that the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in the format of the Contact Group will make an important contribution to the mobilization efforts, strengthening the solidarity and multilaterialism of the members of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries in the fight against the new coronavirus Hikmat Hajiyev acknowledged.
3- What actions has the NAM carried out in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic? A Communiqué from the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, issued on March 25, 2020 in New York, expresses “concern about the rapid spread of COVID-19, which poses a significant challenge to humanity” and acknowledges that “In the face of this type of global emergency, the spirit of solidarity must be at the center of our efforts.”
4- What has been the role of Cuba in the NAM? Cuba is honored to be the first Latin American country to be a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, since 1961. The Greater Antilles presided over the Movement in two periods: from 1979 to 1983, and from 2006 to 2009. Therefore, Havana has been headquarters of the meeting of Heads of State and Government also on two occasions: VI Summit in 1979 and XIV Summit in 2006.
5- Which countries are the Non-Aligned today? The member states of the Non-Aligned Movement represent more than two thirds of the United Nations and around 55% of the world population.
