Before President Donald Trump declared a federal takeover of city police and sent troops marching into the streets of Washington, D.C., some of corporate America’s most influential and deep-pocketed lobbyists spent months drumming up a panic about crime in the nation’s capital. Now, business leaders are celebrating.

Last February, the American Investment Council, private equity’s $24 million lobbying shop, penned a letter to D.C. city leaders demanding “immediate action” to address an “alarming increase” in crime.
