New details on Operation Gideon's Chariots 2 [1]

['Israel National News']

Date: 2025-08

New details have been revealed about Operation Gideon's Chariots 2, the operation to conquer Gaza City, which was approved last night by Defense Minister Israel Katz.

The operation will involve five divisions within the Gaza Strip, including the IDF’s three main regular divisions alongside reserve forces. At the peak of operation, 12 brigade combat teams are expected to operate inside Gaza City: all nine regular brigades, along with three reserve brigades. The preparatory phase has already begun, with targeted operations launched in recent days in the Zeitoun neighborhood and Jabaliya village.

In the coming days, the IDF will begin encouraging Gaza City residents to move south. Humanitarian corridors will be designated for safe passage, and additional aid distribution centers, field hospitals, and upgraded medical facilities will be established. The relocation will not involve individual security screenings due to the large population scale. As the IDF put it: “With masses of people relocating, it's impossible to screen each individual.”

The IDF will issue new emergency draft orders (Tzav 8) to 60,000 reservists, adding to the 70,000 already in service. Peak deployment is expected on September 2nd, following the end of summer break to allow reservists time to prepare. This mobilization is set to last until October-November, with a new wave of call-ups expected thereafter and continuing into early 2026.

The IDF is preparing for an extended operation lasting several months and continuing into 2026. Senior officials stress that the Chief of Staff considers Hamas’ defeat a strategic priority. "If a deal is reached, we’ll adjust," said one official, "but if not - we proceed as planned."

In addition to the new call-ups, those already in reserve service will see their duty extended. Instead of 70-80 days, some will now serve an additional 30-40 days, with certain units reaching up to 140 reserve days during 2025.

According to the IDF, a functioning Hamas brigade remains inside Gaza City, although it reportedly has “limited capabilities.” Furthermore, extensive underground tunnel infrastructure still exists in the area—zones in which the IDF has not yet conducted full-scale maneuvers.
