Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said Florida will honor Hulk Hogan by making Aug. 1 “Hulk Hogan Day” in the state, and he will order flags to be lowered at the state capitol in Tallahassee.
Hogan, the WWE legend who lived much of his life in Florida, died last week at the age of 71 of a heart attack. He was also battling leukemia.
“His larger-than-life personality will be missed, as the “Hulkster” was an icon for many who grew up in the 80s and 90s as well as today,” the governor said in a statement. “He was a true Floridian through and through.”
Trump marked the passing on social media last week, writing that the former wrestler “was MAGA all the way.” The president commended Hogan’s “electric speech at the Republican National Convention.”
Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, gave a raucous 2024 address at the 2024 RNC, complete with a signature shirt-tearing. He spoke just days after a would-be assassin shot Trump in the ear.
“What happened last week when they took a shot at my hero and they tried to kill the next president of the United States, I said, ‘Enough was enough!” Hogan shouted. “Let Trump-a-Mania run wild, brother! Let Trump-a-Mania rule again! Let Trump-a-Mania make America great again!”
Read DeSantis’s statement below:
On Thursday, July 24, 2025, Florida resident and legendary professional wrestler Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, passed away. Hogan was born in Augusta, Georgia, but moved to Tampa at a young age. He began his wrestling career in 1977 and rose to fame after joining World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, first in 2005 and again in 2020 as a member of the New World Order. His larger-than-life personality will be missed, as the “Hulkster” was an icon for many who grew up in the 80s and 90s as well as today. He was a true Floridian through and through. To commemorate his life and legacy, I hereby declare August 1, 2025, as “Hulk Hogan Day in Florida,” and direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, and at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Pinellas County from sunrise to sunset on Friday, August 1, 2025.
