A Majority of Voters Are Not Seeing Job Creation in the U.S. Economy and Think Available Jobs Are Not Good-Paying [1]

The latest jobs report contained encouraging metrics, including higher-than-expected net job gains last month and a lower-than-expected unemployment rate. The White House is extolling it as an “economic boom.” However, the report also contained several warning signs, including slowed wage growth, decreased manufacturing jobs for the second consecutive month, and increased unemployment among Black Americans.
A new Data for Progress survey gauged voters’ perceptions of their financial situation and the job market. It reveals that voters continue to face ongoing financial strain and do not believe available jobs can provide for their needs.
When asked to describe their financial situation, only 30% of likely voters report having enough income to be able to comfortably provide for their household’s needs, while a plurality of voters (43%) say they have enough income but money is tight, and 20% say they do not make enough to provide for all household members’ needs.
Voters who are Black and/or women say that their household’s income is not enough to provide for their household members’ needs at a higher rate than likely voters overall.
