While both sides have faced off before, Tuesday's clashes got particularly physical with both sides being much more aggressive.
Thom Jensen has more in the video report above.
A U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson provided the following statement to NBC Bay Area:
"On July 8 protestors violently attacked and obstructed federal ICE officers who were simply doing their job by enforcing our nation’s laws. Of course these protestors have zero respect for the rule of law, as they so casually violate it. This type of vile behavior has led to a 700% increase in assaults against ICE officers, and just last week, a coordinated attack at an ICE facility led to an officer being shot. There is no tolerance for violence, and those responsible will be held accountable."

The DHS spokesperson also provided the following statement regarding immigration court arrests:
"Secretary Noem is reversing Biden’s catch and release policy that allowed millions of unvetted illegal aliens to be let loose on American streets. This Administration is once again implementing the rule of law.
Most aliens who illegally entered the United States within the past two years are subject to expedited removals. Biden ignored this legal fact and chose to release millions of illegal aliens, including violent criminals, into the country with a notice to appear before an immigration judge. ICE is now following the law and placing these illegal aliens in expedited removal, as they always should have been.

If they have a valid credible fear claim, they will continue in immigration proceedings, but if no valid claim is found, aliens will be subject to a swift deportation."
Editor's note: A man interviewed in the video accompanying this story was described as stepping out of a truck to confront demonstrators. The man says he was actually a passenger on a Muni bus that had been stopped by protesters blocking the street, and he left the bus to walk the rest of the way to work.
